If you have decided to sell your house then you have probably already given a lot of thought as to how to make it stand out from other houses that are currently for sale in Mitchells Plain.
There is a lot you can do –and in some cases, probably should do- that will require resources in the form of time and money. Perhaps give the place a good paint, or replace broken gutters, etc.
There are, however, also a few things that you can do quite quickly and pretty much for free that will make your home more attractive for buyers. Here are 5 free and quick tips:
Irrespective of whether it is daytime or night, turn on all the lights. It creates a warm atmosphere and illuminates spaces that could otherwise be quite dark. It also eliminates shadows that could cause a room to appear smaller than it is.
If it is daytime, also open all curtains to allow natural light into your home.
Every home has a unique smell and we usually either like the smell of our own homes or we just don’t notice the smell of it anymore. Yet when we walk into somebody else’s house for the first time, one of the first things that we notice is the smell of the place –sometimes pleasant, sometimes not.
It is important to neutralize the smell of your house. Don’t do this by emptying a can of air freshener or burning incense. These smells are sharp and can be off-putting to some people. If weather permits, open all the windows of your house and get some fresh air flowing through it. You can also put a drop or two of vanilla essence into a bowl of water and heat it in your microwave.
Keep in mind that this is a show house. You are going to have to look at your place with a critical eye –the way you would if you just spent a good bit of money on a hotel room or holiday place. Make sure that the carpets and floors are clean. There should be no dishes in the sink or the drying rack. Pack it away. Ensure that your cupboards and drawers are clean and neat. They will be opened. Especially those in your kitchen. People will inspect them to assess whether there is enough space for everything they currently own.
4. Remove Garbage
Empty out the garbage in your kitchen bin. This will help both to neutralise odours and make the place look clean. If your kitchen bin is in a bad state or is really just a plastic bag hanging from the door handle, then remove it completely. Empty all other bins in rooms and bathrooms too.
5. Create ‘white space’
The more empty space or white space you can create in your home, the more spacious it will appear. If your wall unit is full of little ornaments then pack these away in boxes. Creating white space is not limited to how much you have in a room. It also includes the extent to which your cupboards are filled. If you have more pots than you need to use, pack those you can do without into ‘storage’. Don’t stock your kitchen cupboards to the brink with foodstuff. Having a little less in it will give the illusion that there is more space in these cupboards. Eat what you have before stocking up again. Pack the toaster and filter coffee machine into a cupboard and only take it out when you need it.
So there you have it, 5 free and quick tips that you can apply immediately to make your house more attractive to buyers.
